When a new expansion launches, or when I am preparing a new character for endgame testing, having a clear and efficient leveling path is essential. Over more than twenty years of playing World of Warcraft, I have developed a specific route that balances speed, quest density, and overall enjoyment.
Whether you are leveling a brand-new character from scratch or preparing an alternate character for the latest content in the Midnight expansion, this is the personal path I use to reach the maximum level quickly.
Level 1 to 10: Exile’s Reach
For any new character, I always choose Exile’s Reach as the starting experience. While the classic racial starting zones hold a massive amount of nostalgia, Exile’s Reach is simply far more efficient. The quest design is linear, the areas are compact, and the game introduces your class mechanics in a highly structured way.
I can usually complete this entire zone in under an hour. It provides a solid foundation of basic gear, a bit of gold, and a fast mount training quest at the end. Once the final dungeon encounter is complete, I head directly to Stormwind or Orgrimmar to choose my expansion path.
Level 10 to 60: The Warlords of Draenor Campaign
Once I reach the capital city, I visit Chromie and select the Warlords of Draenor timeline. Even years after its release, Draenor remains the fastest and most efficient leveling zone in the game for this level bracket.
I start by completing the introductory assault on the Dark Portal. This sequence offers a high amount of experience in a very short time. Once I arrive in Draenor, I establish my Garrison. The initial Garrison establishment quests provide a significant boost, and the zone of Shadowmoon Valley for the Alliance, or Frostfire Ridge for the Horde, has incredibly dense quest hubs.
I focus on completing major quest lines while keeping an eye out for bonus objectives and rare treasures across the map. These extra objectives offer massive chunks of experience for very little effort. If I need a break from questing, I also complete the bonus objectives in Gorgrond, which can easily launch a character forward by several levels in a matter of minutes.
Level 60 to 70: Dragonflight and Skyriding
Once I reach level sixty, the game directs me back to the current timeline, and I head straight to the Dragon Isles. Leveling through the Dragon Isles is incredibly fast, especially now that skyriding is unlocked from the very beginning.
I follow the main campaign story through the Waking Shores, Ohn’ahran Plains, the Azure Span, and Thaldraszus. I avoid most side quests during this phase, as the primary campaign quests provide more than enough experience to reach level seventy. The high speed of skyriding allows me to travel between quest objectives in seconds, significantly reducing the overall time spent traveling.
Level 70 to 80: Khaz Algar and Delves
With the launch of the Worldsoul Saga, the journey from level seventy to eighty takes place in the subterranean zones of Khaz Algar. For this bracket, I combine the main campaign quest line with the newly introduced Delves.
Delves are excellent because they offer a solo-friendly environment where I can test my combat rotations while earning excellent experience and early gear. I complete the main story campaigns in the Isle of Dorn, the Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and Azj-Kahet. I make sure to complete each new Delve I encounter along the way, as the first-time completion bonuses are incredibly generous.
Level 80 to 90: The Midnight Campaign in Quel’Thalas
For the final stretch of the leveling journey in our current expansion, I head to the elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas. The Midnight campaign is beautifully structured, but the density of enemies and the complexity of the Void Assaults require a solid character build.
I start by completing the story chapters in the rebuilt streets of Silvermoon and the surrounding forests. As a Paladin, I make sure my Retribution talent build is optimized for area-of-effect damage, as many of the campaign quests involve fighting large packs of Void-infused enemies. I also weave in runs of the newly opened Labyrinths, which provide a fantastic change of pace and a high amount of experience for five-player groups. By focusing on the main story and participating in local world events, I can reach the maximum level of ninety quickly and begin preparing for endgame raids.
